It made a huge improvement accessing a directory with a lot of files.  According to Microsoft (<a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/cc740106.aspx\"><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/320829\"><\/a>), the setting is increased in Windows 2003.
