{"id":880,"date":"2013-01-04T15:01:33","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T22:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jim-zimmerman.com\/?p=880"},"modified":"2013-01-05T00:18:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-05T07:18:08","slug":"transferring-flexible-single-master-operations-fsmo-roles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jim-zimmerman.com\/?p=880","title":{"rendered":"Transferring Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I don&#8217;t have to do this very often, but always seem to forget how to transfer the <em>Schema Master<\/em> and <em>Domain Naming Master<\/em>, I decided to write it down, when it came up again as I transferred all the roles to my Windows 2012 server.<\/p>\n<p>The following three FSMO roles can be migrated from <em>Active Directory Users and Computers<\/em>.  Right mouse click on the domain and select <em>Operations Masters<\/em>.  There is one tab for each of the three FSMO roles:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>PDC<br \/>\nRID Pool Manager<br \/>\nInfrastructure Master<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The following FSMO role can be transfered from <em>Active Directory Domains and Trusts<\/em>.  Right mouse click on <em>Active Directory Domains and Trusts<\/em>, and select <em>Operations Master<\/em>.:<\/p>\n<p>Domain Naming Master<\/p>\n<p>For the <em>Schema Master<\/em> FSMO role, you first need to register a dll by executing the following command (Note: This only needs to be done once from an elevated command prompt.):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>c:\\> regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, you can add the <em>Active Directory Schema<\/em> Snap-In to a <em>Microsoft Management Console<\/em> (MMC).  With the Snap-In added, ensure that the targeted domain controller is the one that you want to transfer the <em>Schema Master<\/em> role to.  To change it, right mouse click on <em>Active Directory Schema<\/em>, under Console Root, and select <em>Change Active Directory Domain Controller..<\/em> to select the domain controler you want to transfer the role to.  Once that is done, right mouse click on <em>Active Directory Schema<\/em>, and select <em>Operations Master<\/em> to change the role.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not have a different domain controller targeted, you will get the following message:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The current Active Directory Domain Controller is the Operations Master.  To transfer the Operations Master to a different DC, you need to target Active Directory Schema to that DC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And when you switch the target domain controller, you get the following, which is okay for what we want to do.:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Active Directory Schema snap-in is not connected to the schema operations master.  You will not be able to permform any changes.
