iPhone 4 and iPhone3Gs

Got my iPhone4 on Wednesday (6/23/2010), so I spent the previous weekend jailbreaking and unlocking my 3Gs. Unfortunately, I used Spirit to jailbreak my 3.1.3 iPhone3Gs with the 05.21.01 baseband and it was the first time I did jailbreak the phone. So I was unable to update it to IOS4. I need it be unlocked to work on Tmobile. Nonetheless, using it was better than I thought it would be, but the signal in my home is really weak unless I am upstairs. I am keeping an eye out to figure out how I can update it to IOS4 and unlock it.
By the way, I like the new phone a lot. I had issues getting it ordered, but I only did it through Apple. And I have to say to everybody that was complaining about AT&T, Apple had their own issues too. A lot of the time was when it was verifying my AT&T account, but there were other times when it was all Apple. I was able to get my order processed at about 5pm Pacific time.
My only issues so far have been the sharp edges. I hate having to use a case, but I think I going to have to. Also, I have noticed the signal degredation, when holding the phone in my left hand, which I do all the time. The case should help with that too.
Just quick comment. I live in Southern California and did not experience any dropped calls while I had my iPhone 3GS (one day after launch) on AT&T. However, I had two in the two weeks I have had my iPhone 4 on AT&T. Also, I seem to be plagued by the poor signal issue when holding the phone certain ways.
I got IOS4 on my 3Gs. I went to Cydia and added http://repo.woowiz.net as a repository source. Then, I installed Spirit2Pwn from Cydia. Once done with that I was able to create a custom IOS using PwnageTool 4.0.1, and installing the resulting update via iTunes. I am hoping to document what I did in more detail later, but wanted to provide an update.
Also, I ended paying the “Apple tax” by purchasing a bumper for my iPhone4. This seemed to help quite a bit with signal issues, but I have noticed wild swings from 4 bars to 1 bars when I haven’t moved. Nonetheless, I find it much more usable, but still think it is more suseptible to dropped calls than I experienced with my 3Gs. I like the speed, the screen and the camera. Also, almost three weeks into using the camera, I noticed that I was plagued by the yellow blotch issue. I noticed it in Twitter, and really noticed it in a blank Safari screen. The rest of my familly noticed it too. That night I went to the Apple store to show them. It was the first time they had seen the issue which was kind of surprising. It was very noticable on a grey background. They immediately replaced it. I didn’t know if they would even have any (32GB), but they did. I was impressed unlike my MacBook experience. I don’t noticed the spots on the new one. Nothing looks cosmetically different. I have not tested the “death grip” on it yet.
One other thing, I purchased my phone through Apple. It was packaged very well. I ordered my wife’s from AT&T. I could not believe what a poor job was done packing the phone. It was bouncing around in the box. From the tracking information, it looked like it was shipped from the same place as mine. All I know is that experience means that I will always choose Apple over AT&T in the future if there is a choice.
